LEG UP + LEG ROOM 2025

Leg Up is our continued commitment to fostering and developing independent artists, prioritising recent graduates or practitioners in the early stages of their career. The focus and intent of Leg Up is an opportunity for professional development through the sharing of physical and theatrical know-how with the potential of future work with Legs On The Wall. The program is made up of a small group of artists that have shown a vested interest in the company and a passion to develop their skills, and runs over a 12-month term.

Our 2025 Leg Uppers are: Jannah Allen, Ruby Ballentyne, Isobella Laidlaw, Hoyori Maruo, Hugo Poulet, Rena Sangawa, Anais Stewart, and Luca Trimboli.

Leg Room offers artists space and opportunity to practice their craft and test ideas without the pressure of outcomes, with priority given to independent and/or unfunded artists. Successful applicants have the support of the Legs team and our venue resources, as well as the option to share their work to a group of invited peers and industry professionals.

Our 2025 Leg Room participants were:

  • Lucy Doherty developing Life After We Dance, exploring mourning as a vibrant and shared experience and creating space for both grief and catharsis

  • Oli Mathiesen developing Skkip, a large-scale site specific dance theatre duet and installation in and around a skip bin

  • Anna McCulla exploring creative aerial apparatus building and character creation

  • Anais Stewart with SUITable Circus developing The New Hire, a satirical exploration of office life critiquing capitalist structures and highlighting the absurdity of corporate culture

  • Wayne Te Whaiti developing a show about a fictional history of wrestling, playing with gender roles, camp, and showmanship.
